Queer identity is about life and existence

“Remember that this is about somebody's life and existence" - Vikram Queer identity creates engagement across the world and has been part of society and political discussions as far back as we have records. Yet many of us seem to forget that this is about someone's life and right to existence. Upholding the discriminatory barriers and narratives, or revoking inclusive legislation or rights that others have fought and died to protect or establish. Directly challenging, threatening or erasing someone's right to exist, express themselves or their access to healthcare and protection. Combined this has created a harsh environment over the last century suppressing the queer community across the world. History moves in cyclical pathways, where we know previous civilizations such as the Indian one held space for three genders, others integrated gender equality and queer relationships as the norm. If we look at recent history, awareness around queer identity has risen, where deeper understanding about the emotional journeys of the people in the community has spearheaded the movement. Connecting people across identities, borders, and communities. Exemplified through the growing Pride movement and celebration of “same love”. Yet the queer community has faced a recent decline of their rights across the globe. Making the movement for a more inclusive society ever more important in a growingly polarized society. This short film explores queer identity through the lived experience journeys of Camilla, Aksel, Martine, Sergio, Jahira, Momo, Kathrine, Sven, and Noah from the Life Experience Library. Their experiences are supplemented with professional insight and reflections from Vikram Kollmannskog, author and professor in Gestalt therapy at the Norwegian Gestalt Institute (NGI). Bringing you insights into not just the challenges, barriers, and psychosocial toll that queer people across the world are carrying, but also the power of the queer community. Through the growing spaces for healing and opportunities arising from these spaces, both on a personal and community level. But also how you can become an ally and contribute as a majority representative by utilizing your privilege. Because history shows us that when the majority takes responsibility and joins a movement for minority rights, the movement helps us connect beyond the narratives that divide us. Making space for a society where the famous words of Fannie Lou Hamer, the civil rights leader, "No one is free, until we are all free”, becomes the foundation. Connect with their stories and find deeper insights into their journey, to learn more and challenge or extend your own perspectives, as part of your contribution to make a more tolerant and inclusive world.
