Freedom, Loneliness

It felt like it got darker and darker until I had nothing left, and combined with not sleeping at night, the vicious cycle was complete. As an accomplished academic and professional, I felt ashamed of not being able to cope with my life. This fueled my inner critic and the fear of what people would think, but the consequences of my inability to take care of myself and others also tormented my mind. Then, loneliness pushed me further away from sharing my vulnerability and those around me.

See how I sought professional help and how that helped me understand my own depression. This allowed me to move beyond the shame and seek comfort in knowing that it would pass if I focused on what I could change. Learn how I found ways to cope, including opening up to those closest to me, and especially how a close friend came through in the toughest of times. During my last round of depression, I decided to be open with my colleagues, and the way they embraced and supported my vulnerability truly empowered me to continue raising awareness.
