Similar Lived Experiences

I grew up with a profound sense of loss and absence of a male role model at home, raised together with my brother by my mother after my father left. At schools the environment felt unsafe, shaped by conflict in the area I grew up in. I started searching for other spaces where I could feel safe and I developed a passion for cooking that led me to building a career in the culinary field. At the age of 27 while on the way to a cooking course, I was sexually assaulted by three men. I was left traumatised and in a state of loneliness and shame. My depression and anxiety intensified as my trust in society disappeared. As my world crumbled I ended up living on the streets, feeling the weight of the streets and my need to escape.

See how my path took me to a place where I was in life where I reached out to a psychologist, I was finally able to open up about my pain, fear, and suppressed emotions. Through that process, I discovered a resilience in myself I didn’t know was there. This helped me to focus on the positive from my experiences to release me from the weight of the trauma. My journey inspired me to dedicate my life to supporting others with their own challenges. I began working with individuals experiencing homelessness in Cartagena, to be the positive presence I felt I was missing when I was on the streets.

This is my story.
