Similar Lived Experiences
After years of struggling to survive, I left my family as a teen and crossed the border in hopes of creating a new life, only to find myself stuck in the same survival mode, but now as a migrant experiencing xenophobia and feeling lonely without my family. Growing up in Venezuela under the strong global sanctions, I felt that society's demands on us took away any space for my musical passion, and when we lost my father, my mother spent all her energy on survival to keep me in school. I suppressed any hopes of my passion for music being a credible career path because I had to help my family. While focusing on building a life in Colombia, I suppressed my passion, and the more I leaned out, the more my soul died. I ended up having to beg in the streets, like my mother had done to keep us alive, and I felt her pain. I lived in shared housing for migrant women struggling to get a foothold, while the feeling of loneliness and pressure grew, suffocating my self-worth, one day at the time.
See how I started using my voice to make a little money on buses and how this connected me with a youth organization, Fundación Mi Sangre. I joined one of their psychosocial programs and youth leadership programs. This allowed me to share my emotions and get support for my passion for music by making a song about my people, xenophobia, and our journey. Learn how showcasing my talent and connecting with other women eventually led to us creating a workshop called “your voice has power”. I realized how music has always been my way of processing and expressing my emotions, and now, I could teach that to others. I finally found my space in this world by combining a music career with social work.
This is my story.
