Suggested Lived Experiences

My aunt raised me as her own, so when I suddenly lost her in my teens, I was devastated and scared of what would happen to me. My mother left me with my aunt and did not return to my life after my aunt passed. I felt she emotionally abused me, and eventually, I started living alone. My loneliness and unworthiness grew by the day, and I suppressed my feelings as I saw no space for them. After becoming a single mother myself, the burden grew. It got to the point where I only wanted to end my life and take my children with me for them not to suffer as I did.

See how I got a wake-up call from my daughter and how this led me to seek help. I got in contact with a fantastic woman at a community-based counseling container, and she motivated me to join a peer support group. I could let my feelings out for the first time in my life. Meeting and listening to others in my community who faced similar struggles helped me feel seen and understood. Their support allowed me to make space for my grief and learn new routines to tackle my emotional scars and life struggles as a single mother.
