I crawled to freedom from the fire on top of dying friends in what is now called “the Gothenburg discothèque fire”.
I was a refugee child that grew up fleeing the war & suppression in Iran, until my family settled in Sweden. The fire came in a time of rising nationalism and racism in Sweden, where a subculture of us rebelling multicultural youth rose-up, without anyone noticing us. The fire truly changed the narrative of our lives, but it also brought the subculture and our challenges, as a whole into the light.
See how the fire turned me into a survivor in media, representing this national horror story. Very quickly we felt betrayed by society because it felt like they forgot about us. The arsonist got only 8 years, for killing 63 of my friends to just emphasize the entire tragedy.
Learn how I tried to flee the memories of pain and loss, but eventually my past caught up with me. See why I went back to the refugee camp in Turkey to trace my own life steps. Finally, I went to Gotenburg to face my darkest moment, and start dealing with my grief to create a new life narrative. A narrative where I regain the power of my story.
