First, the sentiment turned, and I started experiencing the narrative of “us” and “them” before the killing started. We lost several family members, many of them in front of my eyes, which eventually forced us to flee our homes in Congo. I tried to rebuild a life for our family in neighbouring Uganda, but I was hit in an accident and injured my back. Without treatment, I got a long-term disability, making it hard to contribute in the same way. This hit my self-worth hard, and I started feeling shameful and helpless to the point where I tried to escape self-pity and shame by drinking, but it only made it worse.

Hear how we decided to move to Kakuma, Kenya to try to build a new life yet again and how thanks to my wife, we managed the terrible living conditions in the beginning. I joined a church, and the pastor helped me open up to share my frustrations and shame, helping me to let go of my past and focus on the present. This allowed me to seek work opportunities beyond my disability, and I engaged myself in the board of management to support different educational programs. This opportunity to serve others helped me regain my self-worth and feel valued and useful again.

This is my story.
