Planes bombed the rural community I grew up in during the war, spreading fear and destruction and leaving me and our family in grief over the people we lost. We felt it was not safe anymore and decided to leave Sudan for Kenya to seek refuge. On the way, a bus ahead of us got ambushed and people got killed. When safely in Kakuma, I struggled to settle due to the lack of freedom that we with a refugee background experienced, and my lingering for home grew together with my loneliness and the grief of those we lost.
See how I decided to enter school to find a goal to focus on and help me distract my mind from the grief and loneliness. This helped me reconnect with my passion for teaching, inspired by a teacher and a good friend from back home. When I became a teacher, I learned about psychosocial learning and trauma processing. Empowering me to bring both my lived experience and new knowledge to teach the kids (learners) how to process their journeys and make space for dreams and goals through education and learning.
This is my story.
