They stormed into our village in South Sudan with guns, while I ran with my child on my back, jumping into the river, almost drowning while trying to escape. You saw people traumatized and sick, the hospitals were full, and you could see that people wanted to run “mad.” Realizing it was not safe, I decided together with my mother to leave with my child, younger brothers and nephews to Kakuma, Kenya. Arriving there, we lived in a plastic sheeting tent next to thousands of people. I had to manage how to take care of the children alone, when just fetching water could take hours of walking in unsafe conditions, especially for a young woman like me. Your whole day was spent thinking about survival for all the children.
See how I found a way to send the children to school, while balancing studying myself and trying to make money for us all. My dream was to become a journalist, and it felt far away, then I heard they were starting a radio station in my area. I convinced them to make me a volunteer, but through my passion and talent, I managed to get hired as a radio host. This helped me to express my frustrations through raising awareness on important topics for myself and others. Finally feeling that I had a sense of purpose while I created opportunities for the children.
This is my story.
